Welcome to the Emmaus Project Forum!

Many thanks to Dan and Kevin who set this forum up! It looks great, guys!

The purpose of this forum is to get everyone talking to each other about our OS project. We're still in the preliminary planning stages. The more communication the better.

Why is our domain emmausproject.com? Several months ago a group of us got together (at the Mishawaka Culver's it's worth noting) and brainstormed ways to take gadget-land for Christ. We realized that central to our discussion was the notion of presence: spiritual, physical, technological, etc. Modern technology is creating new ways for us to be present to each other. It reminded us of the account in Luke 24 where Jesus is present to his disciples in a new way—a resurrected-new-creation way. We haven't been resurrected yet but the new creation is here and the Lord is calling us to use gadget-land to make it even more here. Emmausproject.com is the domain under which we plan to work on all our new-creation-enlarging and presence-enhancing open source projects (of which the POP online directory is but the first).

Onward!
Nick

Mmmm....

First of all, I have to say that even though I just had Burger King, just the mention of Culver's gets me hungry. That stuff is so good!

Thanks for kicking off the discussion, Nick. I like the name.

Welcome & Introductions

Hi All,

Thank you for the welcoming, Nick. And thanks for the effort to pull together this forum Dan & Kevin -- much appreciated!

I also agree with the Mmm.. posting that the name emmausproject has been well selected!

I just wanted to try a test post after updating my signature in the My account section, as well as offer the suggestion to those that are a part of this forum to post a little intro/bio of themselves so that we all can get a picture of what our non-graphical community, open-source project team looks like.

My name is Hugh. I grew up in community. I came underway to the People of Priase at the end my senior year of high school ('99). I went to St. John's University in Collegeville, MN (about 1.5 hrs NW of the twin cities), where I minored in Art and Majored in Computer Science. I received a BA in 2003. I the fall of 2003 I was hired at a Consulting Firm, Accenture, where I have since been contracted to various clients in the Retail Industry as a Business & Systems Integration Analyst for the past 3 years. I live in St. Paul, MN and communte to San Francisco, CA. I made to the Covenant to PoP this past September. I have recently come to learn more about the One:Ten team, reading their bios on http://onetencommunications.com. I am excited to volunteer my time, research, and insight this project.

Your brother in Christ,
Hugh

great idea

Hugh, great idea on the bios! Good to read about you, and y'all can expect something from me later today after I hopefully survive a root canal that I'm about to go "experience"! :)

My name is Justin, a product of the Muncie branch, been cozy with the PoP since High Country Adventure #1 but not underway till after college. I majored in Computer Science (with a focus on Linux) and minored in Philosophy, at Saint Joe's College, a tiny school in Indiana. Following graduation (representing '03 also!), I worked for almost 3 years as a Systems & Network Administrator for Shared Marketing Services, Inc. in downtown Chicago. When I first started, I lived halfway between SB & Chicago and tried to participate in the life of the community, but my sanity did not last long and I opted to experience Chicago for awhile. As of May '06, I'm back in SB, working as a Java developer for Orion Group Software Engineers, Inc. I met David Salmon shortly after arriving and have been jealous of all the great work they're doing, ever since. It's such a blessing to be back in the PoP and I'm living in household with the Havards and Pete Gaffney. Ahh... to be back in the midst of accountability!

Ben there, done that

Hey all,

I am Ben Reinhardt. I grew up in the People of Praise, joined Action my sophomore year of high school at Trinity, and came underway late junior year. I joined the Company this last summer.
I am now a student at the University of Minnesota where I am studying either mechanical engineering or computer science. I will choose one of the two sophomore year, if not earlier. As it is, I am learning python outside of school, taught by a brother also in Campus Division. I hope that in the next year I will be able to actually contribute to actually programming Emmaus.

I am excited to see and be a part of where this project goes.

Hello

Hi Everyone, I'm Collin

I went to Trinity for 6 years, and graduated in 2005. I was in action my senior year Action, and I went underway this past August. I'm now currently in my second year at the University of Minnesota, and I'm going for a computer science major. I've done lots of web programing by myself in php and html. One of my classes at the U of M did a 2 weeks of python, but I've brushed up on it a little in the past month and am teaching what I know to some people in the division. I've also tried out a little web programming with mod_python.

Hey, It's Me!

I guess I'm due for an introduction, although it seems I know almost all of you so far.

I'm Dan Ficker. For a brief history, I graduated from Trinity School at River Ridge in 2000. In 2004 I graduated from the University of St. Thomas with a major in Computer Science and a minor in Business. It's kinda cool. Since 1998 (or maybe '97) I've been running a music website, which is currently at inReview.net. I currently work at August Ash Inc., a web design and development firm in Bloomington, MN (right next to the Mall of America).

I am currently the main administrator of this website. This website is definitely made to serve y'all and facilitate the project. If there's anything that I can do to make the project run smoother, I will do my best to make it happen (or maybe have the king of organization help me out). Also, if you have any problems, feel free to report them to me.

Also, as one of the first changes, I think I'm going to add user profiles. That way, we don't have to put all that crap in the signature.

Thanks,

Dan Ficker

Pick me, Pick me!

So many fun forums - I am excited that we're reaching for the day when driving distances mean very little when sharing life and ways to build His Kingdom. Many thanks to all those who are setting up and maintaining these avenues! Also looking forward to joining in the conversations proposed here.

About me: I am Ben Reinhardt's most eccentric uncle, I live in New Orleans with my wife Carolyn (Brewer) and son Danny-- all of us eagerly awaiting our next child in March (the ultrasound is available on our Blog: http://billreinhardt.blogspot.com. I work at Tulane University Law School as a Web Applications designer and am a leader of music ministry in the Branch here.

Keep up the good work, y'all---
- Bill

PS> Does anyone know if there is available a private feed address for Peopleofpraise.org (specifically neworleans.peopleofpraise.org)? I believe the feed requires a login to work.

Alas, no feeds

Bill,
I'm afraid I don't know of any way to get a feed from peopleofpraise.org. It's a problem I've thought of before. The authentication is cookie based, and last time I checked, there where no aggregators that will handle that. One solution would be to allow Basic authentication. I'm not sure how to do that from the current user database, but I bet it's possible. Another solution could be to have a unique key for each user that would go in the URL and "authenticate" them for the feed, like del.icio.us does for my "for you" feed: http://del.icio.us/rss/for/josterpi?private=1b9bcfc03b04b38fa79b6f832e294a56

Ultimately, I think the solution is for someone to find or write a Drupal module to make it work.

-Jeremy

Hey all

Might as well introduce myself. Actually, I'll just refer y'all to the various places online where you can read about me:

Chipmark - about us

In summary, I went to Trinity School at River Ridge ('02), graduated from the University of Minnesota ('06) with a degree in Computer Science, minor in Math, and started working for One:Ten Communications, where I am currently The Programmer. I came underway during the spring of 2004, lived in household the next school year, lived in the not-a-frat house with the newly formed dinkytown Campus Division my senior, and am now living in a newly formed household in South Bend, IN.

Wow!

The Programmer speaketh!

Hi Guys

Literally.

Background: "I'm from the Lou and I'm proud" (Nelly, anyone? Probably not. Cardinals? Budweiser?). I moved to South Bend to attend the University of Notre Dame, where I met the People of Praise through Campus Fellowship. I've been underway since April of 2004 and spent a few crazy years in the Campus Division. In May of '06, I graduated with a degree in design (and minor in journalism) and stayed in ever-cloudy South Bend to work for one:ten and Vine & Branches. For now, you can see a few pieces of my work on my one:ten bio, until the fantabulous day when I settle on a design for my own portfolio site.

Looking forward to a beautiful project.

Allendale and More

Hey y'all,
I am David Zimmel, from 1442 Yale, Allendale. I am currently employed by the POP to manage Windows Doors and More Outlet, and work with construction and demolition in Allendale. I grew up in the Twin Cities, went to Trinity School, and was involved with youth stuff in the Servant Branch. I came underway in the Portland Vancouver branch, as a student of the University of Portland. I graduated in May, 05 with a BS in civil engineering and a minor in math. I have spent two summers doing maintenance on the Greenlawn property in South Bend and 3 summers painting for Jerry Wind before that. I recently made the covenant in South Bend, Oct. 15th.
My actual programming experience is limited to Excel, some Matlab, and whatever language the TI-82 used. I have spent a fair amount of time with computers though, and look forward to this excuse to actually become literate.
Everything for the Kingdom,

Hey Hey

Hello all,

I debated whether to post prior to being underway, but justinw assured me I wouldn't be shot, so if the shootin' starts, start with him!

I'm Chuck Riley and I currently reside in Mishawaka, IN with my wife Kelli who I've been married to since June 25, 2005. I came to know about the PoP through justinw who I met at Saint Joseph's College of Indiana. I majored in Comp Sci and minored in Religion (I met my wife in Moral Theology!) at St. Joe's and graduated in '03. After graduating from college I worked for a small publishing firm, Boskage Commerce Publications, in Allegan, MI programming PHP for their website, VB.NET for their software, and Perl for the oddjobs. I left Boskage at the beginning of March '05 for Orion Group Software Engineers in South Bend, IN where I have programmed in Java, PHP, C, Perl, and VB6. For the last year or so I have been digging into Ruby on Rails on my free time. I don't have too much Python experience (code maintenance only), but did get an opportunity to check out the debate between Adrian Holovaty of Django and David Heinemeier Hansson of Rails at Snakes and Rubies last fall.

As mentioned, I'm not "in the club" *yet*, and it doesn't sound like you have a talent shortage to the point you'd need me, but just thought I'd introduce myself.

Interesting

I think I'm gonna have to check out that debate.

Snakes and Rubies

I watched Adrian's presentation and it's pretty sweet. I love how they were able to make a website in 3 days.

self bio

Continuing with the bios...

I'm a senior electrical/computer engineering major at the University of Portland. I grew up in Edgewood, Washington (just north of Sean Connolly's favorite town of Puyallup and met the People of Praise while at the U of P. Now, I'm in the Company and looking into grad schools that will, I hope, give me the knowledge to expand one:ten communications and facilitate more communications. I come with knowledge of much coding, but no python, yet.

What up?

Hey y'all!

So here's my background: I was born into the NoVA branch of POP, but moved to Minnesota when I was 10. I came underway my junior year of high school. I graduated from Trinity School at River Ridge in '05. I am currently a sophomore at the University of Minnesota going for a major in Civil Engineering. Currently I am living in the 1027 women's household in Dinkytown. I currently know hardly anything about programming, but I'm learning with Collin and Ben, and I am very excited about this project!

Onward!
